The joy of meditating on God’s Word
June 14, 2023
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” -Deuteronomy
6:6-9
In his booklet, “How to Understand the Bible,” Dr. McGee tells us that meditation is something God
expects of His people. In Deuteronomy 6, He says: “His Word was to be with them at all times.” Marci in Canada tells us she’s made a practice of meditating on God’s Word, and it’s made a big difference in her life. She
writes:
“While listening to you, I use a meditation notebook to markdown thoughts and verses while studying the Bible. Then I go through it the rest of the day. I think about what was taught, what God’s Word says, and the Holy Spirit helps me understand more as time goes on. I find Scripture now comes to me more easily and frequently in the times that I need it. It feels as though God’s Word is always with me.”
Today pray more people in French-speaking Canada hear God’s Word and begin to meditate on it. May they become closer to God and experience His presence as they regularly spend time in His Word.
Want to experience the value of meditating on God’s Word in your life? Here are a few tips to get started:
- Begin with prayer. Ask God’s spirit to help you focus and understand what you are reading. (Psalm 119:27)
- Read the passage several times. (That’s why Steve often reminds us to read before and after our studies.)
- Ask questions. What does this mean? What does it say about God? Does this Scripture point to Jesus? If so, how?
- Memorize. Choose a verse that’s particularly meaningful and commit it to memory. Not just short ones … take longer ones and break them up over time.
- Worship. Thank God for His Word, thank Him specifically for what you have learned about Him. Thank Him for His Spirit that guides us. Share with Him what delights you about this time with Him (Psalm 1:2).
God’s plan is always better than ours. That’s what we’re learning in the book of Job, and that’s what we hear from Galen in Seattle. Be here tomorrow for his story.
